What are the goals of a Community Manager?

I've taken on the role of community manager at my company recently and it's something I'm excited about. My first thoughts were that the main focus was on building company culture and building a positive atmosphere internally, but as I search the web looking for clues and insight to this new role I find that a major focus of a community manager is external driven.

I'm cool with this new role and loving the challenge but I'm having a hard time learning how to quantify my efforts and set goals. I'm sure I can come up with some simple goals to start such as:

• # tweets per month
• # blogs per week
• # comments on other blogs/communities per week
• increase site traffic to # by some date

These are goals I can set and I know I can hit, but what about goals for internal efforts? Those are the ones I want to determine but I can't seem to wrap my head around it.

Should my internal goals be on getting employees to blog? to answer questions in the industry? Or should they be focused on more internal culture building?

Please post your comments with sample goals you think a community manger should be setting for themselves. Without goals there is no direction, so please help me find my.

SUCCESS IS THE RESULT OF WELL DIRECTED ENERGY

Powerful message today. I always say the reason more great things are not being built in this day and age is not because people are not smarter, but because of TV :) We waste so much time watching movies, tv and playing video games. I am a victim of all of these but I've learned to limit my time significantly (plus multitasking helps). One thing I do is say I'm going to spend an hour on a specific item, by doing this my mind knows that I only have an hour and it also starts to think about the task before my hour starts. It's amazing how much you can get done when you just clear your mind and only concentrate on that task in front of you. It's like walking you have to take each step at a time, they all seem small but together they cover many miles.

It's important to know how to concentrate it.
Focus your energy on important matters
instead of frittering it away on meaningless things.

if you truly want to be successful.

Gather in your resources,
rally all your faculties,
marshall all your energies,
focus all your capacities upon attaining your objectives.
You must be single minded,
and drive for the things you have decided upon.

The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus.

THE FUTURE IS A BIG ADVENTURE

It's been a few days since my last post. I'm coming down from one of the greatest weekends ever, so how can you right about striving for goals when you just finished reaching one. I wanted to go to the Van Halen concert, and I not only made it happen but I was in the second row center stage. Both my friend and I wanted that so bad and made it happen. After that my wife came to TO for the weekend and we turned that into an unbelievable time. From years of hard work I now know how to take the those couple days here and there to enjoy it. These are mini goals that I've reached and when they turn out so great it makes you want to aim even higher for the next one.

THE FUTURE IS A BIG ADVENTURE

Sooner or later, those who win are those who think they can.
The cards you're dealt in life are less important
than the way you play them.
Every day you face a new deck and new cards.

Carve out a niche for yourself in your imagined future.
Begin immediately to think and feel yourself as successful.
To achieve your goal in life, you need to project your end result.

Focus on your future, not your past.
Prepare for your future, don't live in the past.
Relish your good memories and use any bad ones as lessons in life.

Think of the elation, the satisfaction,

WANTING TO WIN IS EVERYTHING

You can never give up. In my past emails I always referred to the amazing race and how the player who are so far behind just keep going because they know they have to try, and in almost every case they would pull ahead and stay in the game. The success came from another team either giving up, or making a wrong decision. You always have to be more prepared and more hungry than every one else, by doing that you may not win but you'll always succeed and get that much closer to accomplishing your goal. The beauty of always doing that is that along the way odds are you may not reach the goal you started you to reach but you will always reach the goal that you needed.
