Setting those goals

I'm in the process of setting some new goals for myself, my companies
and with others. While doing this with others I quickly saw how
understanding the purpose of a goal and how to create them is not
always common sense.

Setting goals is one the hardest things for me.

Your goal needs to be something that is just out of reach and almost out
of your control to maintain. This is not true for all goals you set
but it would be for a short term goal.

My friend was setting goals that are within their control and also
setting them as moving targets. By doing this you are always going to
win, but without truly pushing yourself. You win by hitting the ones
you know you can and by lowering your targets to what you actually
get. Short term gratification with no true personal growth is the
result.

I told him the goal should be "goal" but to him it was reaching for an
outcome he had no control over so how could it be his goal. But that's
how you grow and push your limits, by making the impossible possible.
It forces you to look beyond your current skill set and build new
skills or reach out to others to help.

The beauty of having your goal outside of your comfort zone is that
even if you don't reach it, odds are you grew in the process and are
now more able to reach it next time.

You never loose when you try. But you have to try in order to win.

THERE IS ALWAYS A GOOD SIDE

There is always a brighter side to everything. I always feel things happen for a reason. If something seems to be bad, just take a step back and think about how you future is going to turn out because of that happening and then think about how it would turn out if it didn't happen. The best way to do this is to just make note of the bad thing, and as great things happen look back and see if those great things would of been if that one bad thing didn't. LOL ... I know this is like a simple little test but it's so true.

Now about a year ago while I was on site with Dan he made me see it a little different and it makes sense. He told me it's not that things just always work out, it's all about your attitude. If you are a person who looks at the negative then things are not going to turn out good, and even if they do you are too focused on the bad thing that happened. But if you are positive person then everything always works out, no matter how bad they are. Thinking positive and being open to change is key to moving forward and always progressing. So many things have happened in my life that should of made me give up, or just always complain, but I personally choose to be positive and look at the brighter side.

THERE IS ALWAYS A GOOD SIDE

Everything depends on the way you look at things.
View every problem you encounter as an opportunity.
There is always a good side to every situation.

The optimist sees an opportunity in every misfortune.
The pessimist sees misfortune in every opportunity.
The optimist sees the doughnut.
The pessimist sees the hole.

You can develop success from every failure.
Discouragement and failure are two stepping stones to your success.
No other elements can do so much for you if you're willing to study them
and make them work for you.

When it is dark enough, you can see the stars..

YOU ARE WHAT YOU REPEATEDLY DO

I think it's suppose to take 3 weeks of doing something over and over again before it becomes habit. Once you reach that point it's then second nature and you remove the mental motivation and preparation part from doing the basics actions. Then your mind is free to innovate and focus on doing those actions better. Musicians and athletes have it all figured out. Practice and then more practice are the keys to success, but not just success but winning with out thinking. Their bodies know what to do in every situation before their minds even have time to think about. Imagine you being in that state of mind with your own destiny. Life is throwing curve balls at you but because you are so focused on your goal and you've trained yourself on how to stay focused you body and mind are making moves without you even knowing it. you are passing up opportunities that don't lead you to your end goal. You are making decisions that only lead you to where you need to be. You managed to make you whole being focused on your main target of accomplishing that goal. Can you make a decision without over analyzing it, without worrying about the outcome. If you can move through your days this way then you are going to reach your goal much faster.

I write these blogs without thinking, without rereading them or anything. I write these words with the practice I've gone through, my mind is focused on trying to get others motivated and thinking in a certain way that I write these emails/blogs without even thinking about them. I love to go back and reread them after the fact, but for the most part I just trust myself enough to let them flow without thought.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU REPEATEDLY DO

First you make your habits, and then your habits make you.
You become a slave to your constantly repeated acts.
What at first you chose, at last compels.

Your thoughts lead you to a purpose.
Your purpose moves you to take action.
Your actions form your habits.
Your habits determine your character,
and your character fixes your destiny.

Your habits are either the best of servants
or the worst of masters.

Once in motion, a pattern tends to stay in motion.

Seven Rules of Motivation

I was going through the company codex at Spheric and came across this amazing set of rule posted by Dan. I don't think I've ever seen these before and as I read through them it was just WOW. Here are the 7 rules we have listed in our company for all the read and help push themselves forward.

#1 Set a major goal, but follow a path.
The path has mini goals that go in many directions. When you learn to succeed at mini goals, you will be motivated to challenge grand goals.

#2 Finish what you start.
A half finished project is of no use to anyone. Quitting is a habit. Develop the habit of finishing self-motivated projects.

#3 Socialize with others of similar interest.
Mutual support is motivating. We will develop the attitudes of our five best friends. If they are losers, we will be a looser. If they are winners, we will be a winner. To be a cowboy we must associate with cowboys.

#4 Learn how to learn.
Dependency on others for knowledge is a slow, time consuming processes. Man has the ability to learn without instructors. In fact, when we learn the art of self-education we will find, if not create, opportunity to find success beyond our wildest dreams.

#5 Harmonize natural talent with interest that motivates.
Natural talent creates motivation, motivation creates persistence and persistence gets the job done.

#6 Increase knowledge of subjects that inspires.
The more we know about a subject, the more we want to learn about it. A self-propelled upward spiral develops.

#7 Take risk.
Failure and bouncing back are elements of motivation. Failure is a learning tool. No one has ever succeeded at anything worthwhile without a string of failures.

Number 2 is a big one in my eyes and it's the one that motivates me the most. I'm big on not on just finishing what you start but also leading by example. If you are leading a team and all they know is you never finish what you set out to do, then what are they going to think. And how are you going to react to them when they don't finish a task.

How do you motivate yourself? What are your little kick in the pants tricks?

Assumptions change your direction

Take a moment and think about how you respond when somebody asks you why you never did something, or why you did it a certain way. You most always say "I Assumed".

Why do we always assume things we don't know and then let our assumptions affect our actions?

I just read this article on "Why assumptions are bad for business" and they explain it perfectly. I found myself reading it and thinking back over the last few years of my life and how a lot of the roads I went down were because of my assumptions. Looking back I can only imagine where I'd be today if I didn't assume but either just asked or did. (Nike got it right "Just Do It").

Over the last year or so I've tried to fully embrace the teachings of "Think and grow rich", "The secret" and just being positive overall. I've noticed that I've been working much harder to remove not just assumptions but also excuses from my conversations. It's made a world of difference thus far and I'll keep practicing this until it's just a part of who I am.

What is one thing you assumed today and how did it affect your actions?

Where's your seat?

For most of us we know where we sit. Our seat is in a place we are familiar with and in a circle of comftable situations. For all of us we have this place where we can go to relax and not be scared if any unknowns.

Almost all of us have been forced at some point to step outside that circle and sit with people and things we don't know. And for the most part we pull through it and do an amazing job. We don't only do a great job but we grow. We expand our experience, strengthen out confidence and expand our knowledge.

Why is it that most of us choose to stay seated in the known and avoid the unknown? Most people spend their lives not trying to grow but only grow when forced to sit outside.

I feel that myself and the group people around me are always moving our seats around. We each force ourselves and each other to be in those uncomftable positions. The world is always changing and the only way we move forward is by changing with it. Sure we can all let the world push us to change but it's so much more fun being the one deciding the changes we want.

Where are you going sit to at today?
